The Environmental Fellows Program is a summer fellowship program for masters and
doctoral students that seeks to place students traditionally underrepresented 
in the environmental field and those committed to the principles of diversity, 
equity, and inclusion in summer fellowships with environmental foundations and 
their grantees. 

Deadline to apply is February 7, 2018

The Environmental Fellows Program involves:
A 13-week paid fellowship at either an environmental grantmaking foundation, or 
at one of their grantees. Placement sites include: NAACP, New England Grassroots
Environment Fund, Clean Water Fund, and many more! 
Fellows will receive a stipend of $10,000 plus a travel allowance. 
Last year's cohort worked on a wide variety of issues: environmental health, 
marine conservation, transit solutions, energy justice, to name just a few! 
Fellowship placement sites are available in a range of places included but not 
limited to: New York City, Richmond, VA, Boston/New England region, San 
Francisco, Florida, Michigan, Chicago, IL, Washington DC! 
Fellows receive training in: diversity, equity, and inclusion; institutional 
culture; and professional development.

Program Goals and Eligibility

The Environmental Fellows Program is looking for the future leaders and decision makers in the rapidly changing fields of the environment and philanthropy. We want to support graduate students who:

  • have leadership and academic potential; 
  • are interested in diversifying the environmental field through involvement in philanthropy;
  • are committed to supporting and advocating for the principles of equity and inclusion;
  • think broadly beyond traditional definitions of the environment and have the ability to work across differences.  

Members of underrepresented socio-cultural or geographic groups, including: first generation college students, veterans, African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or economically disadvantaged individuals are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants must: 

  1. Be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or DACA/DREAMers (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). International students are ineligible. 
  2. Have completed at least one year of graduate study by the start of the fellowship program and be currently enrolled in a masters or doctoral program. Students graduating from graduate and doctoral programs in 2018 are welcome to apply.
  3. Have a record of superior academic achievement.

Strong applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • come from an educational, cultural or geographic background that is underrepresented in graduate study in your discipline in the United States or at the University of Michigan;
  • have demonstrated a commitment to diversity in the academic, professional or civic sector through work experience, volunteer engagement, or leadership of student or community organizations. By diversity we mean efforts to reduce social, educational or economic disparities based on race, ethnicity or gender or to improve race relations in the U.S.;
  • have experienced financial hardship as a result of family economic structures; 
  • are first generation U.S. citizens or first generation in their families to graduate from a  four-year college.
